“Chief — thanks for taking the time. You’re running for Sheriff. First question: we’ve seen a surge in crime, and we’ve also seen a surge in violent crime, homicides. Why do you think that is happening and what would you do as Sheriff to stop it.”

Robert Luna

“The challenge that you’re describing is significant. And it’s getting everybody’s attention — as it should be. People should be angry about what is happening. You’re asking ‘why is it happening?’ and unfortunately there are a lot of factors involved. I think at some point we’re going to have to let academic experts study why this is happening, but at the end of the day it’s in front of us now and we have to hold people accountable. The police have to respond, but before we respond, we need to put ourselves in [businesses’ or private residences’] shoes. How can we communicate with them? How can we make sure they know that we know what’s happening and how we’re addressing it. Our job is when it occurs, we respond. The goal is to make arrests, to investigate, and to put forth the best criminal case we possibly can.”
